Protective Glass

Color cameras are fitted with an IR cutoff filter to improve the color reproduction of the camera and protect the sensor.  Monochrome cameras are fitted with clear BK7 glass.  The glass may be removed in the field with the exception of the PL-A780.

Removing the Camera Glass

  1. Carefully remove the two screws that hold the clamp to the C-mount.

  2. Carefully lift out the clamp with a pair of tweezers.  Note that the inner bevelled edge of the clamp faces the outside of the camera.

  3. Place a lint-free cloth over the C-mount.

  4. Slowly tip the camera until the glass lands gently in the cloth.

  5. Store the clamp and screws.

  6. Cover the C-mount to protect the sensor from contaminants.

Installing the Camera Glass

  1. Hold the camera with the C-mount facing up.

  2. Using a pair of tweezers, carefully place the cleaned glass onto the flexible gasket.  Ensure that the glass is seated flat and centered in the gasket cavity.

  3. Using a pair of tweezers, carefully place the clamp over the glass.  Orient the clamp so that you can see the bevelled edges from the outside of the camera.  Line up the two notches of the clamp with the two threaded holes in the C-mount.  Ensure that the clamp is seated flat.

  4. Secure the clamp to the C-mount with the two 2-56 x 1/8" screws.

Caution

Removing the glass increases the likelihood of contaminating the image sensor.  If the glass is not in place, operate the camera under clean-room conditions only.

Cleaning

  1. Carefully apply puffs of dry, compressed air to move particles off the center of the glass.

  2.  Remove oils with a swab moistened with reagent-grade isopropyl alcohol.  The swab should be damp but not dripping.

Caution

Do not use acetone to clean the glass.
