Primary Camera Use?

Machine vision (MV) is a branch of engineering that uses computer vision in the context of manufacturing and the analysis of images to extract data for controlling a process or activity.

Microscopy is the technical field of using microscopes to view samples and objects that cannot be seen with the unaided eye.

Monochrome or Color?

Monochrome/Black & White images are taken in neutral colors and are generally good for the low and high end of the light spectrum.

Color cameras include a Bayer sensor and use a color filter array that passes red, green or blue light to selected pixel sensors and forms interlaced grids sensitive to RGB.

Body-Type and Orientation

Standard cameras feature lenses that beam the image straight back towards the power supply/connection end of the camera. These cameras are meant to be placed in open areas and housed in a hard camera body.

Right Angle cameras feature lenses at 90 degrees from the power supply/connection end of the camera. These cameras are meant to be placed in open areas and housed in a hard camera body.

Board Level cameras are used as components that go inside products with their own protective enclosure. Their components (lens, board) are therefore exposed.

Cable Interface To Computer

FireWire is available on many computers. It transmits data up to 400Mbs with IEEE-1394.a protocol and 800Mbs using IEEE-1394.b protocol using cables that can be up to 4.5m long.

USB is available on almost all computers. It transmits data between 40Mbs – 480Mbs using cables that can be up to 5m long.

GigE, short for Gigabit Ethernet, is good for industrial high-speed applications. It transmits data up to 1Gbs using cables that can be up to 100m long.

Shutter Type

Global shutters expose all image areas at the same time. They are good at capturing objects that are moving and being exposed to steady light.

Rolling shutters move across the exposable image area. They work best in conditions with stationary objects and using strobe/flash lighting.

Interline Transfer involves CCD (Charged Coupling Device) technology. These shutters work well to when capturing objects that are moving and being exposed to steady light.

Triggering Options

Software triggering means the camera is controlled by PixeLINK’s API and will only capture an image when the software requests one.

Manual/Hardware triggering requires a trigger that is externally connected via an external cable. Triggers could include strobed illumination/bulbs, optical switches that detect motion, or other hardware or software triggers.

Resolution?

A megapixel (MP) represents one million pixels. It is a term used not only for the number of pixels in an image, but also to express the number of image sensor elements of digital cameras or the number of display elements of digital displays.
